Most of us start out with sparkling white teeth due to their porcelain-like outer surface. This outer surface, or enamel, is designed to protect the teeth from the effects of chewing, trauma and acid attacks caused by sugar. Over time, the enamel is worn down, becoming more transparent and allowing the yellow inner layer, dentin, to show through.

During routine chewing, dentin remains intact while millions of micro-cracks occur in the enamel. These cracks then fill with stain and debris over time resulting in a duller appearance. “Teeth whitening” removes these stains and debris, leaving the enamel cracks open and exposed. Some of the cracks are quickly re-mineralized by saliva, while others are filled up again with organic debris.

To obtain their optimum smile, we offer patients an economical at-home whitening option. This includes customized impression trays and syringes of whitening gel to improve the appearance of your teeth over just a few days. This eliminates the need for multiple visits to the dentist and allows the patient to whiten their teeth in the comfort of their own home at their own convenience.

To extend the longevity of newly whitened teeth, we recommend:

  • At-home follow-up or maintenance whitening – implemented immediately or performed as infrequently as once a year.
  • Avoiding dark-colored foods and beverages for at least a week after whitening.
  • Whenever possible, sipping dark-colored beverages with a straw.
  • Practicing excellent oral hygiene – brushing and flossing after meals and at bedtime.
